Nicolae Tonitza is born to Barlad the13 Aprile 1886, has been a painter, journalist and Romanian art critic being modernism’s precursor in local art. 

The artistic studies, the start in art?

For to enter and to know the art he frequents the painting courses at National Academy of Art from Iasi where have the teachers Gheorghe Popovici and Emanoil Bardasare.

At Paris he visits artists’ ateliers continuing the studies through artistic contemplation of painting to reference by French great painters, in these ways the impressionism, post- impressionism captivates him in totality.  The decorative style, the way of thinking, the compositions and the fast of “Belle Epoque” have a decisive influence in his esthetic choices painting the landscape, portraits and compositions. He exposes in his atelier of Montparnasse conforming him in this way at the epoch style, but his personal talent brings at colors’ experimentation. After a time, he comeback in Romania, where paints varies frescoes at churches from Scorteni, Poeni and Valeni , and in same time he teaches the drawing at military lyceum, continuing the work of editorialist to Iasul paper together Cezar Petrescu. After the studies, he works as artist in varies works of painting makes him present at Bucharest together Stefan Dumitrescu.  He comes in on the first Mondial war in Romania army in which he has a painful fate falling prisoner in the battle from Turtucaia where he gets sick of malaria and rheumatism takes him until the end of life. For to continuing him the artistic career he is dedicated at painting on the ceramic, writes editorials and organizes the expositions. At Biennale of Venice, he comes in the year 1924 together of Francisc Sirato , Oscar Han and Stefan Dumitrescu a group named “the group of four”, at a divers exposition represented with the singular pieces. He is considered in this epoch “The most important Romania painter in life “with the expositions in Barcelona, Amsterdam and Bruxelles. He is the revolutionary painter of compositions! We can say of him that is a notable critic of Nicola Grigorescu that influencing the young generations leaving the mannerism, nationalism in compositions, in subjects and in urban art. His painting has influence from Rembrandt and Antonio Correggio adapting at expressions in forms of contour. He paints with a soft intellectual resonance with the light tones in contrast without realizing the social problems which surrounds him. 

 He remains expressive in portraits, in varies colors, his sensibility is viewed in brightness light, becoming exalting in chromatic, harmony tones with a perfect form in decorative grace and color.
